Australia hit by hybrid solar eclipse

In the 21st century, there will be 224 solar eclipses, but only seven of them will be hybrid or annular-total eclipses. Because of the curvature of the Earth’s surface, the eclipse can sometimes change during the movement of the Moon’s shadow, writes Universe Today. This is the rarest type of eclipse called a hybrid eclipse.

During the first of two solar eclipses that will occur this year, the shadow of the Moon covered Australia, Indonesia, and Southeast Asia. The hybrid solar eclipse began on April 20 as an annular eclipse at 5:37 AM Moscow time in the Indian Ocean, passed over northwest Australia, and peaked off the coast of East Timor at 7:16 AM.

For viewers in East Timor, the Sun was completely covered by the Moon for 1 minute and 16 seconds. After that, the “center” of the eclipse moved towards Indonesia and ended in the Pacific Ocean at 8:56 AM.
