What is the mission of Artemis 2?

The “Artemis 2” project is the second crewed flight within the Artemis program, developed by the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) with the aim of returning astronauts to the Moon and eventually creating the conditions for exploring Mars.

The Artemis program was announced in 2017 and represents a multi-stage plan for exploring the lunar surface, including landing astronauts on the Moon’s south pole by 2024. “Artemis 1” was the first uncrewed test flight of the new generation Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and the Orion spacecraft, which was launched in November 2021. It was successful and allowed for the testing of numerous systems and technologies that will be needed for future missions.

“Artemis 2” is planned as the first crewed flight on the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft. In this mission, a crew of astronauts will be sent to orbit around the Moon, where they will conduct a series of scientific research and test life support systems, radiation protection, and other important aspects of long-duration space flights. This is a crucial step in preparation for subsequent missions, such as “Artemis 3,” which is planned to include landing astronauts on the lunar surface.

In the long-term perspective, the Artemis program is designed to develop infrastructure for further exploration of the solar system, particularly Mars, and to stimulate the development of new technologies and international cooperation in the space industry.
